August is one of our few summer months where people are outside enjoying the weather and usually undertaking more activities than they normally would. And that sounds like a good thing! But these activities, including sports, playing with the kids, or grand-kids, yard work, traveling, cleaning or even moving can cause strain and pain on your back. For these reasons, August is the perfect month to dedicate to back health awareness.
Here are some tips to help prevent back strain.
Don’t bend over to pick things up. Lift the item by bending at the hips and knees and then squatting to pick up the item. Avoid twisting your body when lifting.
Push rather than pull when you move heavy objects.
If you have to sit for long hours either behind a desk or wheel, make sure to take time to stop and stretch.
Wear flat shoes or shoes with low heels 2.5 cm (1 inch) or lower.
Best position for sitting is to keep knees a little higher than your hips and use chairs with straight back or low-back support.
To put less pressure on your back when sleeping is to sleep on your side with your knees bent. Also use a firm mattress.
If you have to stand for long periods, rest one foot on a low stool and switch each foot every 5 to 15 minutes.
Stretch your back before doing sports or physical work. Lie on your back with your knees bent and slowly raise your left knee to your chest. Hold for five seconds, relax and repeat with your right knee.
Hopefully these tips will help you to prevent back pain, so you can keep doing the activities that you enjoy doing while the warm weather is here.
