Soon we will be ringing in the New Year, saying goodbye to 2016 and hello to 2017. There will be many people celebrating at house parties, bars, ticketed events, or city halls. While these are great places to spend time on New Year’s Eve, there is something nice about spending a quiet night at home with your significant other, family, or a couple of close friends. And a great way to spend the evening is watching movies. Below is a list of movies that take place either on New Year’s Eve or around it, ranging from romance to horror, and from 1950 to 2015. There should be a movie for everyone.



When Harry Met Sally (1989) – “Can a man and a woman be friends, without sex getting in the way?” is the question this movie is trying to answer. It’s a classic 80’s movie that rates 7.6 out of 10.

Bridge Jones's Diary

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) – An average woman makes a New Year’s resolution to take control of her life and keep a diary for the whole year; a great movie to watch with girlfriends and swoon over Colin Firth. 6.7 out of 10.

An Affair to Remember (1957) – A chance meeting and a kiss on New Year’s Eve has the two individuals agreeing on meeting again in six months on top of the Empire State Building. You can never go wrong on choosing this golden oldie. 7.6 out of 10.



New Year’s Evil (1980) – A radio DJ takes a call and the stranger states that he will kill a girl when New Year’s strikes in each time zone and the DJ will be the last on the list. Looking for a B-rated horror…this one is for you. 4.8 out of 10.

Rosemary’s Baby (1968) – featuring a Gothic building with an unsavory history, over-friendly elderly couple with malevolent plans, strange dreams, pregnant woman and paranoia running rampant, this horror classic is always good for a re-watch. 8.0 out of 10.



Trading Places (1983) – A bet between two brother millionaires changes the lives of a streetwise con artist and stuck-up commodities investor. With two kings of 80’s comedy, Aklroyd & Murphy in this movie, you know you will have a good laugh. 7.5 out of 10.

200 Cigarettes (1999) – Set in 1981 on New Year’s Eve in Lower East Side where a bunch of twenty-something’s deal with relationships, loneliness, desire and their neuroses. If you are looking for a movie that deals with a large cast and multiple storylines, this should keep you entertained. 5.9 out of 10.

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) – A stock scam is the basis of this movie. At Hudsucker Industries there’s a fast way to the top and an even faster way down. If you are a fan of the Coen brothers, you shouldn’t miss their second movie. 7.3 out of 10.

Ghostbusters 2 (1989) – 5 years after the first movie, the Ghostbusters find a river of ectoplasm under New York and an ancient sorcerer is trying to possess a baby. You can’t go wrong with a little paranormal activity on New Year’s Eve. 6.5 out of 10



Sunset Boulevard (1950) – A tale of heartache and tragedy, love and ambition, told against the fabulous background of Hollywood with murder and total madness. The only black and white movie on this list and is worth a view. 8.5 out of 10.

The New Year (2010) – A daughter gives up a promising future to take care of her ailing father in her hometown. A high school rival returns for the holidays and makes her re-examine her life. This touching, funny and engaging Indie could be right up your alley. 6.3 out of 10.

Survivor (2015) – A State Department employee is wrongly discredited; she must stop a terrorist attack set for New Year’s Eve in Time Square while on the run. This thriller should keep you on the edge of your seat. 5.6 out of 10.



The Godfather Part II (1974) – The early career of Vito Corleone in 1920s New York is portrayed while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on a crime syndicate. Considered one of the best mafia movies of all time, it can’t be missed. 9.0 out of 10.

Ocean’s 11 (1960) – Eleven friends plan to rob five Las Vegas casinos in one night and that night is New Year’s Eve. If you are a fan of the Rat Pack, this is the movie you must watch. 6.6 out of 10.



The Poseidon Adventure (1979) – A passenger ship is flipped by a tidal wave on New Year’s Eve and a group of survivors have to figure out how to escape. This movie has 15 Academy Award winners in its cast. 7.1 out of 10.
